Snow Day!

Remember how those words were magic when you were younger?

Back then "Snow Day" simply meant a day off from school. Before the Martin Luther King Holiday, winter breaks and longer spring breaks, we had to rely on Old Man…

Taxation Without Representation

It goes without saying that Washington, DC is filled with things to do. As the nation’s capital, DC boasts the sites of government power and function. It is filled with buildings and monuments of unbelievable historical importance. Its museums are a testament to human history and inquiry. Its sports teams are now (reasonably) competitive. Its cultural offerings are superior. There are more things to do here in DC and the surrounding areas than even the most aggressive tourist could do…

JOB HUNTING IN DC

I had been employed full-time prior to coming to DC, and wanted full-time employment again, so I knew I needed to start a job search. There was just one major hindrance as I started my search…I was afraid to drive off the base. Even though I was raised in a large city, and even though I had lived in a foreign country halfway across the world, Washington DC’s traffic reputation had preceded itself. I had witnessed the maze of the “mixing bowl,” where I-395 and I-495 converge and witnessed the…

SLOW TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT

The first time I arrived at the airport in DC, my husband was quick to point out that there was an unwritten rule for the escalators and moving sidewalks. He said I had to stay to the right, so others on the conveyances desiring to move at a quicker pace could pass on the left. Apparently, this is an even bigger issue in this area than I had imagined. This week, as I made my daily commute to work, I spied a bumper sticker on the back of a car that read,…

Tears at Christmas

Living in the DC area during the holidays is already paying off big dividends with opportunities to celebrate the Christmas season. I knew opportunities must surely abound for filling my schedule with shows, tours, parades, and shopping. But, I wasn’t sure exactly which events, so I decided to “google” December events in DC 2012, and boy, did I get results. Some of the happenings that made my list for the month are Mt. Vernon’s Candlelight tour, the Historic Homes Tour in Old Town,…

In the Shadow of Greatness - September 11, 2012

We all remember where we were on Sept 11 and what a terrible day it was, one we will never forget. As we get closer to the anniversary, I am sure many folks wonder if there are rememberances or services in the local area. On September 11 , the book In The Shadow of Greatness will be launched at the Navy Memorial.  The book pays tribute to those who lost their lives from the Naval Academy graduating class of 2002. My friend Lisa Freeman will be speaking - Lisa lost her son Matthew Freeman, a…

Another Free and Fun Thing to do in DC

So if you haven't taken that trip to the Fort Myer Thrift Shop yet, here is another good reason to go over that way. The Old Guard lets folks visit with the ceremonial horses. I went recently and got the chance to meet Sergeant York up close and personal. He's a real beauty and most famous for being the riderless horse who carried President Reagan's boots backwards in the stirrups during the funeral procession in DC. I believe, but don't hold me to it - you can visit everyday between 12-4pm.… Continue
