Being a Part of the ATM

Last Sunday I laced up my sneakers and joined over 30,000 over people and participated in the Army Ten Miler. My friend and I took the metro in the dark. When we exited, we got to watch the sun come up over the Pentagon. It was such a beautiful site. We were quickly overwhelmed with how many people who were joining us. It's funny you can say over 30,000 people out loud and not really comprehend how many people that really is until your running with them. All of my friends were in different…See More

Gettysburg

Last weekend we took a short road trip up to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Yellow Ribbon Fund partnered with the Blue and Gray Education Society to treat wounded warriors and their families to a peaceful day away from the hospital. Of course being a homeschooling families, I jumped at this opportunity. I have a tendency to jump opportunities to go somewhere I have never been before. I didn't realize that Gettysburg was so close to DC. I guess I should look at a map more closely, huh?!We got up…See More

Going Postal!!

I have been on a non stop mission to find unique places to see in DC. We found another great one to share with you this past week. You must go check out the Smithsonian's Postal Museum. It is just a hop, skip and a jump from the Union Station Metro stop on the Red Line. You simply get off the metro and walk next door to let the learning and fun begin. The postal museum is a must stop for home schooling families. There is so much to do there and so much of it is hands on. Here you can see our…See More

Where were you?!

As an American you can't help but pause and think about where you were on this day 11 years ago. I was only 22 and I remember it all so vividly. How could I ever forget the day the word "war" came to life?I had been battling a sinus infection all that week. I had called the day before and set up a doctor's appointment at Ft Campbell. Chaz and I had only been married for a few months and I was still getting accustomed to the military system. My sister called to ask if I had seen the news and I…See More

War Makes You Older?!

I read this the other day and you should as well.http://www.usatoday.com/news/military/story/2012-08-06/veterans-aging-study-trauma/57608072/1For the majority of America, this is "news." For those of us living in the less than one percent with those who have deployed again and again to life-threatening situations, this is anything but news. Let me start all of this off by…See More

Hurry to the Legos and Mini-Golf!!!

Recently the Yellow Ribbon Fund treated the wounded warrior families to a day at the National Building Museum in DC. It was a day full of learning and a few little surprises were tossed in there too. We took the Metro's Red Line to Chinatown and enjoyed a lovely short walk to the Museum. The museum is on 401 F St NW and you could take the Judiciary Square stop, but it was a beautiful day for a walk and we wanted to discover food on our way over. When you walk in the museum's Great Hall, you are…See More

Clemyjontri Park

A few weeks ago we ventured out to Clemyjontri Park in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was a short drive from our apartment in Silver Spring, MD. We enjoyed an amazing day of fun at this park that is accessible for kids of all ages. Here's an aerial view of the layout of fun that was to be had. The amazing Yellow Ribbon Fund put…See More

Our Hillwood Adventure

Do you need a nice quiet place to retreat? Would you like to not travel very far to find a  little peace in the city? Well I have the place for you.Wednesday I took a Mommy's Day Off and joined my fellow caregivers at the Hillwood Museum. This immaculate place is definitely a hidden treasure in DC. Hillwood is so peaceful and quiet you would never know it exists. You surely don't know that just two turns away is the hustle and bustle of the big city. It was just amazing. The Yellow Ribbon Fund…See More

A Visit to Wolf Trap is a Must

Friday night my hubby and I went on a double date to the Wolf Trap to watch Rain-A Tribute to the Beatles. This was the beginning of our non-touristy adventures in DC. We were more than pleasantly surprised with our visit. The Wolf Trap is definitely a must for every family. We were shocked at how close it was to us. We thought it would take way longer to get there. Instead we found out it was just a short drive into Virginia. We arrived early to discover arriving early is a must for the best…See More

Morven Park

Adding to our non-touristy adventures of the DC area, I took our daughters to Morven Park in Leesburg, Virginia yesterday. Operation Second Chance set up the event and created a great wounded warrior family friendly adventure there. We had a nice day learning about the former Governor, his family history and his love of equestrian sports.…See More

Spying

We are working on our non-touristy adventure list here in DC. Yesterday we took a family adventure to the International Spy Museum. We had a great time! The Spy museum was fully handicap accessible and was great for our family. We discovered the Galley Place/Chinatown stop was the best stop for us. Unfortunately we didn't discover the elevator…See More

An Evening with Sarah McLachlan

Wounded Warrior caregivers do not find enough time for themselves. We are so busy caring for our warriors and our families that we forget to take a break to do something fun that's just for us. Thanks to the help of a great non-profit, I was able to put together an incredible night for several caregivers.I am a self-professed music junky. I like every kind of music from Opera to Rap and everything in between. I am a big fan of several artists. A few months ago I saw Sarah McLachlan was coming…See More
